The History of Movie Premieres

movie premieres history

A quintessential symbol of Hollywood, movie premieres have been around since the dawn of the movies. The first red carpet movie premiere took place in 1922 at the Egyptian theater on Hollywood Blvd. in Los Angeles – a location Red Carpet Systems is very familiar with having set up plenty of premieres at the Egyptian. Organized by Sid Grauman, the event was not only celebrating the opening of the Egyptian theater but also the release of Robin Hood starring Douglas Fairbanks. In 1927, Grauman opened the Chinese theatre right across the street, this venue still being known as the home for red carpet events. During Wold War 2, premieres were suspended but came back in full force after 1945.

Not much has changed since that time, Hollywood studios still trying to outbid each other with lavish galas. Despite a brief stint in Westwood, most film premieres are still taking place for the most part in Hollywood – principally at the Chinese, Egyptian and ArcLight theatres – as well as a few other towns such as New York.

While it would take too long to mention all the memorable premieres that have been taking place throughout the years, what is sure is that it all culminated with the premiere of Star Wars: Episode VII – The Force Awakens just a few months ago, an event that proved to be even bigger than the Academy Awards.
